How to answer: A key customer metric drops 8% overnight. How do you investigate and communicate the response?
Whether you start from the customer and diagnose in a calm order.
What the interviewer is testing.
Customer obsession and structured diagnosis. Whether you start from the customer and diagnose in a calm order.
An outline for this question.
- First check that the drop is real: data pipeline, tracking, a change in how it is counted.
- Break it down: by region, platform, customer type, and the step in the journey where it falls.
- Line it up against changes: releases, outages, campaigns, a competitor, a holiday.
- Tell people early what you know and do not know, then give a recommendation and the next update time.
The mistake to avoid.
Jumping to a cause. A broken tracker is the most common reason a metric falls overnight.
The general method: frame, evidence, recommendation.
The same shape works for most role knowledge questions, whatever the topic.
- Frame the problem: what is being decided and who is affected.
- Say what evidence you would gather first, and why that order.
- Give a clear recommendation and the risk you would watch.
Practice it, out loud.
Reading an outline is not the same as saying it. Answer this question in a mock interview, in your own words, then compare it with the outline above.
