How to answer: Walk me through a deal you lost and what you changed afterward.

Whether you take ownership and learn, instead of blaming the buyer.

What the interviewer is testing.

Ownership, diagnosis, and adaptation. Whether you take ownership and learn, instead of blaming the buyer.

An outline for this question.

  1. Describe the deal briefly: who, how big, how far it got.
  2. Say honestly why you lost it, naming what you could have done differently.
  3. Explain how you found out: a debrief with the buyer, or your own review of the calls.
  4. Show the change you made afterwards and a later deal where it worked.

The mistake to avoid.

Blaming price or the competitor. It tells them you did not learn anything.

The general method: situation, action, result.

The same shape works for most behavioral questions, whatever the topic.

  • Set the scene in two sentences: the team, the stakes, your role.
  • Say what you did, in the first person. Name the decision you made and why.
  • Give the result with a number if you have one, and one thing you would do differently.

Practice it, out loud.

Reading an outline is not the same as saying it. Answer this question in a mock interview, in your own words, then compare it with the outline above.
