How to answer: How would you determine whether a social feature creates meaningful interaction rather than empty clicks?
Whether you can tell real interaction from hollow clicks.
What the interviewer is testing.
North-star and quality metrics. Whether you can tell real interaction from hollow clicks.
An outline for this question.
- Define meaningful: a reply, a conversation that continues, or a return visit, not a single tap.
- Compare users who used the feature with a matched group, or run an experiment.
- Look at depth over time: do the conversations last, and do the same people come back?
- Add a quality guardrail and read a sample of real interactions to see what the numbers hide.
The mistake to avoid.
Counting clicks. Clicks are what hollow engagement looks like.
The general method: frame, evidence, recommendation.
The same shape works for most role knowledge questions, whatever the topic.
- Frame the problem: what is being decided and who is affected.
- Say what evidence you would gather first, and why that order.
- Give a clear recommendation and the risk you would watch.
Practice it, out loud.
