Question bank / Sales, Role Knowledge, Intermediate
How to answer: How would you position a platform migration when the customer fears vendor lock-in?
Whether you can take a customer's fear seriously and offer a path that lowers it.
What the interviewer is testing.
Risk, trust, and phased value. Whether you can take a customer's fear seriously and offer a path that lowers it.
An outline for this question.
- Acknowledge that the worry is reasonable and ask what lock-in would cost them in their own terms.
- Show portability: open formats, data export, standard interfaces, and exit terms in the contract.
- Propose a phased migration that starts with one low-risk workload and proves value before they commit more.
- Agree measures of success for the first phase, so the next step is based on evidence.
The mistake to avoid.
Promising that lock-in is not an issue. Show how they could leave, and it becomes easier to stay.
The general method: frame, evidence, recommendation.
The same shape works for most role knowledge questions, whatever the topic.
- Frame the problem: what is being decided and who is affected.
- Say what evidence you would gather first, and why that order.
- Give a clear recommendation and the risk you would watch.
Practice it, out loud.
Reading an outline is not the same as saying it. Answer this question in a mock interview, in your own words, then compare it with the outline above.
