How to answer: What is your greatest strength?

Whether you know your real strengths and can prove one.

What the interviewer is testing.

One real strength, proven with an example. Whether you know your real strengths and can prove one.

An outline for this question.

  1. Pick one strength that the job needs, not a list of five.
  2. Say it plainly in one sentence.
  3. Prove it with a short example: what happened and what it led to.
  4. Link it back to the role: this is how it helps your next team.

The mistake to avoid.

Naming a generic quality like hard working with no example. Anyone can say it, so it proves nothing.

The general method: honest, specific, brief.

The same shape works for most hr questions, whatever the topic.

  • Answer the question that was asked in your first sentence.
  • Back it with one specific example or fact, not a general claim.
  • Tie it to this role, and stop. A calm thirty to sixty seconds is enough.

Practice it, out loud.

Reading an outline is not the same as saying it. Answer this question in a mock interview, in your own words, then compare it with the outline above.
